Genetics of Modern Housecats

Last year, house cats (Felis domesticus) joined the ranks of organisms like Drosophila, humans, and Arabidoposis. The house cat genome is completely sequenced. Now that researchers have a full genome to work with, they're starting to decipher some of the genetics mysteries behind where and how house cats came to be so closely associated with humans.

The work of Dr. Leslie Lyons (her lab is appropriately called "Lyons Den") shows that modern house cats started living in close company with humans roughly 10,000 years ago in what is now Turkey. To learn more, read this article.
